Pregnancy, a risk post egg donation

A new study from the University Hospital Aachen explains why women who get pregnant after egg donation have to be categorized as high-risk patients. The researchers found that 8 women who had become pregnant after egg donation had to be treated with pregnancy-induced hypertension and three out of these pregnancies had to be terminated prematurely for fear of the mother's life. The other 5 cases showed a milder course of pregnancy-induced hypertension.  More...

When can depression occur? The biggest UK study so far on depression in pregnancy found the peak time for experiencing such problems was at 32 weeks, when 13.5 per cent of women scored highly on tests for depression. Performance anxiety? Write your worries away, study says

Researchers at the University of Chicago found that U.S. high school and college students who wrote about their fears about an upcoming test right before it was to begin got better grades than their peers who wrote about other topics or did not write at all. In one part of the study, college students who wrote about their feelings about their upcoming math test for 10 minutes before it started solved 5 per cent more problems. "In fact, we think this type of writing will help people perform their best in a variety of pressure-filled situations -- whether it is a big presentation to a client, a speech to an audience or even a job interview." More...

Weaning before six months 'may help breastfed babies'

Relying purely on breastfeeding for the first six months might not be best for babies, experts in the UK have warned.In the British Medical Journal, the team said breastfed babies may benefit from being given solid food earlier.Current advice suggests weaning should occur at six months, but the UCL team say it could happen as early as four.They suggest later weaning may increase food allergies and iron deficiency levels, but other experts backed the existing guidance. More...
